On Sunday afternoons, I used to go to the Potomac Polo Club in Poolesville, Maryland. There, rather than watching the game itself, I was watching “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” Dragoons and Cossacks, Cowboys and Indians. To me, it seemed that Polo was where the Cavalry went after it disappeared.
In this painting, the ball that's being chased is providence or fate. The younger man on the younger horse is the first to begin his turn. And now that I'm firmly mounted on the older horse, I may not want to change my direction. But to always go in the right direction, I need to follow the ball itself.
