In 1938, the concept of a shopping center was still new when the Woodmoor Shopping Center was built in Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1970 John Stohlman converted the landing of a single stairwell into what was possibly the narrowest jewelry and watch repair shop in the country.
Aptly named the Watch Pocket, this painting is the view that customers encountered for almost thirty years as soon as they walked in. I was struck by the view myself and thought Mr. Stohlman would be an excellent subject to represent the Creator of the Universe. Although he said I made him look too old, he was complimented by the comparison.
